What to expect at a rally

Radio rallies are a staple of the amateur radio hobby. They're part flea market, part trade show, and part social event — and a brilliant day out whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced operator.

Traders and bring-and-buy

Most rallies have a mix of commercial traders selling new equipment and accessories, and a bring-and-buy table where operators sell second-hand gear. You can often find great deals on second-hand radios, cables, antennas and books.

Meeting the community

Rallies are a great chance to meet other local amateurs, put faces to callsigns you've heard on the air, and chat to people with far more experience. Don't be shy — the amateur radio community is famously welcoming to newcomers.

Talks and demonstrations

Many rallies feature talks, demonstrations and special interest displays covering everything from antenna building to digital modes, satellites and emergency communications. Worth checking the programme in advance.

First time attending?

Take some cash, wear comfortable shoes, and don't feel obliged to buy anything. Just having a browse and talking to people is entirely fine. If you're studying for your Foundation licence, many people will be happy to answer questions and point you in the right direction.
